Repeated issues while logging on to the KIT WLAN - F I X E D

DescriptionSince February 15, 2024, multiple occurrences have been observed where logging in to the KIT WLAN (SSIDs KIT and eduroam) failed for some users.

After the detection of such service disruption it can be remedied quickly, but the system can switch back to the erroneous state at any time. We are working with the manufacturer to find a permanent solution to the underlying problem.
Affected usersAll users of KIT WLAN at all sites of KIT in Karlsruhe

KIT-Mailboxes: Change of mail routing - Note the impact

The SCC will gradually make changes to mail routing for KIT mailboxes over the coming weeks and then re-enable external access to smtp.kit.edu.

AFFECTED
  • E-mail mailboxes at KIT

PLANNING/ACTIONS
  • Tuesday, 26.03.24 - Tuesday, 16.04.24
    • Mail routing will be changed step by step for all KIT mailboxes.

  • Tuesday, 23.04.24
    • External access to smtp.kit.edu will be enabled again once the changeover is complete.
    • Mails with potentially dangerous files attached will also be blocked internally.

    IMPACT
    • Interruptions to the e-mail service at KIT are not expected. Please note the information below regarding spam, phishing or blocking of mails.

    • Tuesday, 26.03.24 to Tuesday, 16.04.2024

      • After the routing for a KIT mailbox has been changed
        • Mails that were not previously recognized as SPAM or PHISHING will be recognized as spam, end up in the spam folder or even be rejected by the mail server after the mail routing of a KIT mailbox has been changed.

  • Tuesday, 23.04.24
    • After re-enabling external access to smtp.kit.edu, sending via smtp.kit.edu from outside without VPN is possible again.
    • Mails with potentially dangerous files attached are also blocked internally. This applies in particular to attached RTF files or Word/Excel documents with macros (docm and xlsm).

    Important NOTE
Mails with potentially dangerous files have been blocked for a long time when sent externally or received externally.
If it is necessary to send such files internally, please use either mail encryption (S/MIME or PGP) or the file exchange services provided:
    CAUSE
    • Increase security when sending mails within the KIT.
      • Up to now, not all mails sent within KIT have been checked for spam and phishing. The change in routine means that these previously unchecked mails will also be checked for SPAM and PHISHING.
      • At the beginning of September 2023, the sending of emails via smtp.kit.edu was blocked due to a wave of phishing, see https://www.scc.kit.edu/dienste/meldungen.php#hinweise. This block is to be lifted.
