Student Assistant Networks and Telecommunication Department

The Networks and Telecommunication department looks after the entire campus network and a diverse range of network services. The services are constantly being expanded and developed. If you would like to contribute to the further development of our services as a student assistant, you have landed on the right page. Below we have listed various jobs for students. If there is nothing suitable for you, you can also send us a speculative job application. All positions are available immediately and are for a minimum of six months.
Even if you don't have much experience yet, you are welcome to apply. With us you have the opportunity to build up and expand your knowledge of computer networks and software development and to gain experience in teamwork.

Our office for student assistants is located in room 007.2 in SCC building 20.21 on KIT Campus South. If there is no pandemic, you can work here together with other student assistants on our projects. But working from home is also possible - not only in pandemic times.
In the office fo student assistants we have workstations with two monitors, a comfortable sitting area and a whiteboard for sketching ideas. Should you be thirsty, there is a fridge with drinks and various snacks at cost price. In the office, our trusty pony Pinky Pie will always keep you company.
In the computer rooms in the basement of building 20.21 is our test lab where you can experiment with hardware.

Our team will support you during your onboarding. The distribution of tasks and discussions of problems takes place in regular team meetings, which can also take place on site if necessary. We will provide you with a working device. The working time is flexible between 20 and 80 hours per month and you can usually arrange yourself when you want to do your work. Student assistant (f/m/d) Software Development

In the Networks department, we develop a lot of our own software for the documentation and management of our network. In particular, we are currently working on the automatic configuration of our network components.

Areas of responsibility:

  • Automation of the configuration of network components
  • Programming at the backend
  • Developing CLI tools

Software used:

  • Debian GNU/Linux
  • Python 3

Basic experience in software development is an advantage but not mandatory. It is important that you are willing to deal with the development of software.

Student Assistant (f/m/d) System Administration (Linux)

The Networks and Telecommunications department operates approximately 200 servers for the operation of the network. This includes authentication servers, log servers but also servers for documentation, administration and automation of the network configuration.

Areas of responsibility:

  • Setup of new servers
  • Further development of the automation of server configurations
  • Software updates of existing servers and services
  • Troubleshooting and repair

Software used:

  • Debian GNU/Linux
  • Ansible
  • VMware vSphere

Basic experience with Linux is an advantage but not mandatory. It is important that you are willing to deal with Linux extensively.

Student Assistant (f/m/d) Public Relations

The Networks and Telecommunications Department operates the entire campus network at KIT and various network services for all KIT members. For this purpose information is published on the SCC website and regularly in the SCC News.

Responsibilities:

  • Revision of the general pages on the Networks and Telecommunications Department
  • Design and maintenance of the service pages of the Networks and Telecommunications Department
  • Assisting staff with the creation of SCC News articles

Software Used:

  • OpenText WSM
  • Text processing software such as Libreoffice Write or Microsoft Word
  • Graphics software such as GIMP

Experience with above software is not required. It is important that you are willing to learn new topics and that you enjoy expressing them in your own words.

Student Assistant (f/m/d) Web Development

In-house web applications are programmed in the Networks and Telecommunications department to manage the services provided.

Areas of responsibility:

  • Extension or refactoring of existing web applications
  • Development of new web applications
  • Creation of web designs

Software and frameworks used:

  • VueJS
  • Bootstrap
  • Python 3
  • Flask

Basic experience in web application development is an advantage but not mandatory. What is important is that you are willing to deal extensively with the development of web applications.

Student Assistant (f/m/d) WIFI Operation and Expansion

The Networks and Telecommunications department operates the entire campus network at KIT. This includes a dense network of indoor WIFI access points and coverage of highly frequented outdoor areas.

Areas of responsibility:

  • Installation of new and replacement of defective WIFI access points
  • Administration of the central WIFI system
  • Troubleshooting and fixing
  • Testing and transfer to productive operation of new WIFIsolutions

Experience in the field of WIFI technology is an advantage but not a prerequisite. It is important that you are willing to familiarize yourself with new topics.

Student Assistant (f/m/d) Network Operation and Expansion

The Networks and Telecommunication Department operates the entire campus network at KIT. In order to keep it running, regular work is required to keep it operational.

Student Assistant (f/m/d) Linux System Administration Matrix Communication Service at KIT

The SCC introduces a matrix service for employees and students at KIT. The development of the matrix service is accompanied by a planning team. Together with the planning team, a design for the matrix service will be developed. Subsequently, the server systems for the matrix service shall be set up and transferred into operation.

Tasks in detail:

  • Research on the Matrix communication protocol and its implementations
  • Comparison of server implementations with respect to performance, features and stability
  • Design of a Matrix service at KIT together with the planning team
  • Installation of the server systems for the Matrix service
  • Installation of monitoring for the Matrix service
  • Supporting the operation of the servers and user support during the beta phase.

Software used:

  • Debian GNU/Linux
  • Ansible

Experience with Linux and an automation tool is helpful for these tasks.
