First Steps at SCC - Information for first-year Students

Welcome to the Steinbuch Centre for Computing, the Information Technology centre of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

A list of the services frequently used by students and access to detailed information is published at presentation for the orientation phase (O-Phase) and at www.scc.kit.edu/studinfo.

Requirement

A prerequisite for the use of all services is a KIT user account, which is created automatically after enrollment. All students will receive by post the corresponding registration data. Account activation has to be done via the SCC self-service portal. Only after activating the account, students can use other services such as the e-mail system, computers in the SCC pool areas or access to the KIT-Network via WLAN/VPN. Student accounts are uxxxx.

First Aid

SCC service desk is the first point of contact for all questions related to the KIT user account such as a forgotten password. Students will also receive information about available services.

The service desk is located in the foyer on the ground floor in the building 20.21 (Campus South) and is open from Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

At TechPoint, students will receive assistance when they need to use application software, if they have questions about the wireless network, VPN or printing services. Problems that occur in the SCC's pool areas can also be reported there. The TechPoint is manned by student assistants from noon to 2pm from Monday to Thursday.

Pool areas – desktops at SCC

There are several computer pools available in the SCC building 20.21 (Campus South) which can be used. They are marked with letters A to L. The paths to these rooms are signposted. The SCC building is freely accessible from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9.00 a.m. to 13.00 p.m. With the KIT student ID access is also possible outside these hours. The exact opening hours are available to students at pool site or on the signs on the SCC entrance doors. The PCs are installed either with Windows or Linux.

E-mail

The KIT e-mail system is available to all students. After successful activation of the KIT account, an Exchange mailbox is automatically created. The e-mail address is uxxxx does-not-exist.student kit edu. The mailbox can be opened online via the https://owa.kit.edu website. It can be easily integrated into the mailbox function of the smartphone. If students already have their own e-mail address and want to use it exclusively, they should set up routing in the SCC Self-service portal under e-mail forwarding. Important: The KIT mailbox should be called up regularly, as all study-relevant mails end up there. Just reading the ILIAS messages is not enough.

Home office

Most of the SCC services are also available on the Internet, as a prerequisite for this, either a virtual private network (VPN) connection or - on campus - a WLAN access to the kit network is needed.

Printing at SCC

The Print & plot area provides central 600dpi fast printers for A3/A4-S/w and color printouts as well as large format color plotters. The printers are available on Windows and Mac OS (drivers), Linux/Unix (cups) and via Internet browser (COPS, web upload), the plotters only with COPS. In the pool rooms, duplex-capable A4 laser printers with recycled paper are also provided. This service is available only for a small fee, but SCC only charges the material price.
