Exascale Earth System Modeling

The Exascale Earth System Modelling (PL-ExaESM) pilot lab explores specific concepts for applying Earth System models and their workflows to future exascale supercomputers. The project is divided into five work packages, which address the programming and data science challenges of these future high-performance supercomputers by means of co-design between domain scientists and computer scientists. PL-ExaESM provides a new platform for researchers of the Helmholtz Association to develop scientific and technological concepts for future Earth system models and data analysis. The complexity and heterogeneity of exascale systems, new software paradigms for the next generation of Earth system models and fundamentally new concepts for the integration of models and data are required. Specifically, PL-ExaESM will develop new solutions for parallelization and scheduling of model components, handling and provision of large amounts of data, and seamless integration of information management strategies along the entire process value chain from global Earth System simulations to local impact models.
In addition, the potential of machine learning for the optimization of these tasks will be investigated. PL-ExaESM will act as incubator for the Joint Lab EESM in POF IV. It will improve the cooperation between the research fields and centres of the Helmholtz Association and help to position the Helmholtz Association as an important player in European flagship initiatives such as ExtremeEarth and others.
