Problems with the VPN of the KIT?

Do you have a problem with the VPN of the KIT? Try out the following steps:

  1. Read the VPN configuration guide for your operating system (the detailed instruction that comes after the short instruction) and compare the settings with those on your system.
  2. Read the VPN FAQ!
  3. In case nothing has helped: Gather all necessary information (see below) and contact the VPN support via email.

 

Windows

  1. Before starting the VPN, go to the following website: http://wieistmeineip.scc.kit.edu (tab "Summary") and take a screenshot. In case your Internet Service Provider ist one of the following: KABELBW, KABELDEUTSCHLAND, VODAFONE or LIBERTYGLOBAL, go to the FAQ, section OpenVPN General and follow the instructions for the question "I have Vodafone/Unitymedia/KabelBW/KabelDeutschland as Internet Provider...". Most likely your problem will be solved then.
  2. We need your OpenVPN log, you can find it in the status window (Ctrl+A + Ctrl+C to copy everything to the clipboard, then Ctrl+V to copy it to email). You can also find the log via the OpenVPN menu under Log Information.
  3. If the establishing of the VPN-connection fails with an error: Take a screenshot or copy the error message
  4. If the VPN connection is established (but not working):
  5. Now send the complete information to vpn does-not-exist.scc kit edu.

Mac OS X

  1. Before starting the VPN, go to the following website: http://wieistmeineip.scc.kit.edu (tab "Summary") and take a screenshot. In case your Internet Service Provider is one of the following: KABELBW, KABELDEUTSCHLAND, VODAFONE or LIBERTYGLOBAL, go to the FAQ, section OpenVPN General and follow the instructions at the question "I have Vodafone/Unitymedia/KabelBW/KabelDeutschland as Internet Provider...". Most likely your problem will be solved then.
  2. We need the OpenVPN Log.
    Tunnelblick
    You can find this in the menu of the Tunelblick-symbol under “VPN-details”. Copy the complete log by clicking on “copy diagnostic options in clipboard” and paste it into the e-mail.
    Viscosity
    Go to the Viscosity menu and open the Details window. Please make sure that the correct connection is selected in the connection menu to the top-left hand corner of the screen.

    Then click on the Log button, which is the third button from the left. 

    Save the log and attach it into the e-mail.
  3. If the establishing of the VPN-connection fails with an error: Take a screenshot or copy the error message.
  4. If the VPN connection is established (but not working):
    1. After starting the VPN, go back to the website: http://wieistmeineip.scc.kit.edu and take a second screenshot.
    2. Describe what exactly does not work.
  5. Now send the complete information to vpn does-not-exist.scc kit edu.

Linux

  1. Before starting VPN, go to the following website: http://wieistmeineip.scc.kit.edu (tab "Summary") and take a screenshot. In case your Internet Service Provider is one of the following: KABELBW, KABELDEUTSCHLAND, VODAFONE or LIBERTYGLOBAL go to the FAQ, section OpenVPN General and follow the instructions in the question "I have Vodafone/Unitymedia/KabelBW/KabelDeutschland as Internet Provider...". Most likely your problem will be solved then.
  2. We need the OpenVPN Log. When starting OpenVPN in the terminal, it will directly be shown. If you are using the network manager you can find the OpenVPN log in the syslog. Copy the entire log and paste it into the e-mail.
  3. If the VPN connection is established (but not working):
    1. Execute the commands "ip a" and "ip route" in the terminal and copy the output into the e-mail.
    2. After starting VPN, go back to http://wieistmeineip.scc.kit.edu and take a second screenshot.
    3. Describe what exactly is not working.
  4. Now send the whole information to vpn does-not-exist.scc kit edu.
