OU Printers
-
Organizational units (OUs) can distribute their self-managed office and floor printers via the print server "scc-print-ou.scc.kit.edu". The setup on the print server is done by Print & Plot, the printers themselves are operated by the OU (client setup, consumables, maintenance, purchase/replacement). Print output is tied to the opening hours of the OU.

The print server for OU printers has been given a generic name to simplify user management in the event of hardware changes. It is now accessible under the name scc-print-ou.scc.kit.edu
The old name can still be used for the time being, but should no longer be used for new setups. Please let your colleagues know about this change!

Connecting an OU printer to the PC/notebook
Employees of an OU can connect their own PC/notebook by simply calling up the print server and selecting the desired printer.
Prerequisites
- The printer must already have been set up by the OU's IT representative (ITB).
- The employee must have sufficient rights to install a printer on it's own PC.
Otherwise the ITB must help.
Connecting PC and printer
Note: Only the establishment of a printer connection to a Windows system is described here. For Apple computers - taking into account the correct print server scc-print-ou.scc.kit.edu - instructions can be found under ... → Print services → Print & Plot ‑ C... → FAQ / Help → Direct print.
- Open the "Execute" window (key combination <Windows>+<r>)
- In the input mask, enter two"\" (key combination <Alt Gr>+<ß>), followed by the print server name:
\\scc-print-ou.scc.kit.edu - In the next screen, enter the user account in the form KIT\ab1234 and enter the password.
Note: If the domain "KIT" is already specified, only the user account ab1234 must be entered! - In the next window, select the desired printer with the right mouse button and select"Connect".
- The new printer can now be set as the default printer.
Note: For mobile devices, this leads to error messages every time you change location with a network change, as the connection between the your device and the print server is interrupted. However, an OE printer can be connected quickly with a small script that establishes the VPN tunnel and the connection to the print server. - Finish the procedure with "Finish"
- To reconnect the printer, enter the following in "Execute"...

Setting up an OU printer queue
To set up a new OU printer queue on the SCC print server "scc-print-ou.scc.kit.edu", the Print & Plot team requires the following information. Please direct all requests to the Print & Plot OU printer administration for quick processing oe-druckerXvx6∂scc kit edu.
- Download URL of the printer driver
The following aspects should be considered when selecting the printer driver:- PostScript driver (PS): We recommend PostScript instead of PCL because of Windows and Apple support.
- PCL driver: When deciding on this type of driver, a PCL6, "Type 4" (User Mode) driver should be selected.
- Universal printer driver: For resource reasons, we prefer the manufacturer's "Universal" driver. If the driver does not support special features (multifunction printer, MFP), a device-specific driver can be installed.
- 32-bit printer drivers are no longer supported.
- Static DHCP IP address (and possibly IP box number)
The printer must communicate with the print server via a static DHCP IP address. Such an IP is assigned via the "NETVS" web tool.
Access authorization for your own OU network in NETVS can be requested from the DNSVS operations team (email: dns-betriebXvx6∂scc kit edu). - DNS names
- The DNS name is set up via the "NETVS" web tool.
- If possible, the host part of the name (only the device name, not the FQDN!) should be identical to the Windows printer name (share name) (see below).
- Users and User Groups
At least two user groups should be created in the KIT Group Management system ("KIT-Gruppenverwaltung") (Access to Group Management):- Administration group: contains the ITBs (OU admins) of the organizational unit (OU) with administrative rights, e.g.
<OU abbreviation>-Print-Admin - Employee group: contains all employees of the OU who have printing rights, e.g.
<OU abbreviation>-Print-Users - Optional additional groups...

- Printer name
The printer name (Windows share name, DNS host name) consists of five parts. Parts 1–4 must follow the format shown below; the last part is optional; we recommend using an abbreviated model or function name. Here are two examples for an office printer at SCC:
OU abbreviation -Campus Building number Room number -Model name For example: SCC-CS20.21*

* Preface with a hyphen (-) in the basement-HP4050Result: SCC-CS2021R-128-HP4050
