The SCC offers you to activate your KIT account in a secure way in order to be able to use various services such as e-mail with this account.

The Federated Login Services, FeLS for short, provide a secure, central access point (single sign-on) for services that are also used by members of other research institutions. Using the federated open-source identity management system RegApp, registered users from the different institutions are enabled to securely log on to various services. The persons can use the account provided by their home institution.

Allows ITBs to manage the groups of their OU.

With the Guest and Partner Management (GuP), KIT organizational units can provide their partners with the accounts and services necessary for collaboration. The GuP is an application in the User Portal (UP).

A KIT Admin account is used for unique identification of a neutral administration account in the IT environment of an organizational unit (OU).
For this purpose, the OU administrator / ITB applies for an administration account for an employee / himself, with which the employee can then perform his administration tasks.

A KIT service account is used to uniquely identify a service in the IT environment of an organizational unit (OU).
For this purpose, the OU administrator / ITB applies for a neutral service account for a service, under which this service can then be executed.

For all KIT employees, the KIT user account, also known as the KIT account, is the basis for many IT services that users in the KIT network require. It provides access to systems and services and is generally used as a "login" in the KIT environment.

Access to the KIT-AD via LDAP

Self-service portal for students, employees, and guests and partners (GuP). This includes functions related to the personal KIT account, such as password change.

The Shibboleth Identity Provider provides authentication and authorization with single sign on of users for participating service providers.

Various services at KIT have increased IT security requirements that go beyond a simple login with user name and password. These include in particular the SAP system and various VPN accesses.

The designated IT officers (ITB) of a KIT OU have the possibility via this service, among other things, to have a new password randomly generated for accounts of their supervised OU. It is not possible to specify a password yourself. Furthermore, accounts can be removed from groups that are also managed by the group administration for ITB.

This service enables the IT representative to create temporary WLAN accounts for guests at KIT. These accounts are valid for a maximum of two months and allow guests to get internet access in WLAN and LTA.

The SCC offers a file transfer service ftp.scc.kit.edu for use at KIT.

The federal state service bwDataArchive offers a solution for long-term data archiving, which is especially available for employees of universities and public research institutions in Baden-Württemberg. Data archiving is carried out at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and includes reliable storage of even large data sets for a period of ten or more years. The service enables a qualified implementation of the recommendations of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for the securing and storage of research data.

The personal directory is a highly available and central data storage for personal data and documents. The repository is available to all KIT employees, but cannot be shared with other users.
The service KIT data storage (for students) is especially offered for students at KIT (see Links).

MySQL is a popular open source database system, especially in the web environment.
KIT employees and students can create and set up their own MySQL database at SCC using their KIT account. (For students this service is free of charge, otherwise see applicable budgeting rules).

Hosting of Oracle databases and applications

PostgreSQL is a widely used, object-relational database management system (DBMS). The SCC operates the open source product on its own server systems and offers KIT employees the possibility to use PostgreSQL databases for official purposes.
This service is currently not yet available to students.

The RDM@KIT service team sees itself as a partner of science and research. We support you at KIT with services for sustainable research data management, starting with the application of scientific projects up to publication and archiving.

KIT students and staff can print A3 and A4 documents as well as large formats up to a maximum of 89cm on the short side on the central printers and plotters.

For cutting large-format print media, the SCC provides a professional cutting table with a cutting width of 1,800 mm. It is located in the basement of the SCC directly next to the elevator shaft and can be used by all KIT members free of charge and without registration.

The folding machine performs all common single, wrapping, Z and double parallel, altar, drawing and cross folds for flyers in A3 - B7 formats and grammages from 50 - 160 g/m².

Certification service based on X.509 certificates for users and servers with associated documentation. X.509 certificates are also used for signing and encrypting e-mails, among other things.

This service provides an e-mail box (with groupware functionality) for sending and receiving e-mails.

This service provides all users of the DFN (German Research Network) scientific network with distribution lists for e-mails for operating their own lists.

This service is used by KIT employees and students to compile and administer their own mailing lists. These lists can be configured for different applications e.g., as moderated lists, discussion forums, or newsletters.

Use this procedure to report malicious messages and spam to the SCC. An email clearly identified as a malicious message can be moved to the Spam_KIT folder in your mailbox by participants in the malicious email and spam reporting process. KIT students and staff can participate in the reporting process.

Anti-Virus Protection for mail servers at KIT

The Computational and Data Scientific consulting offers support for High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Intensive Computing (DIC) users. Requests can be submitted to the simulation and data life cycle labs as well as the software sustainability and performance engineering team through the designated voucher system, depending on the scope of the support and the subject area. Upon acceptance of a voucher project, requestors will receive professional support from HPC-DIC specialists at SCC.

Computer algebra systems are used to solve mathematical problems using symbolic methods. 
The SCC provides the two systems Maple and Mathematica as campus licenses for the KIT.

SCC gives KIT users access to High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Intensive Computing (DIC) infrastructures. SCC itself operates several computer systems (bwUniCluster 2.0, HoreKa) for different user groups. In addition, KIT scientists can use the bwForClusters within the framework of the bwHPC federation. The SCC also advises on applications for computing time on supra-regional high-performance computers (Tier-2), such as the HoreKa, or on the national supercomputers (Tier-1) of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (JSC, HLRS, LRZ).

Users can access the HPC resources operated by the SCC via Jupyter. All that is required is a web browser. Within the web application, source code of different programming languages can be edited and executed and calculations can be visualized interactively. In addition to tools for documentation, various user interfaces and terminals are available.

"SCC Flyers" are printed flyers with short instructions for selected SCC services.

The Service Desk is the central contact point of the SCC for all inquiries, problem reports and requests concerning the IT services of the SCC. Requests that the SCC Service Desk cannot answer directly are forwarded via a ticket system to teams of experts within the SCC. You will be informed automatically by e-mail about the current status of your request.

The SCC Service News contains relevant information regarding changes to the services offered by SCC.

The ticket system of the SCC is used to record and process all requests to the SCC. In addition, organizational units of the KIT (OU) can use the SCC ticket system to manage OU-specific support processes.

Technical Client Support (TCS) is in charge of the centrally managed IT workstations at KIT. TCS sets up the workstation computers as well as connected components and configures them for centrally managed operation in the service units at KIT.

The TechPoint serves as a contact point for technical problems and the laptop lending service for students.

Microsoft Teams is a cloud platform that combines chat, meetings, video conferencing, notes, collaborative file editing and sharing, and tasks. This supports teamwork and especially collaboration with colleagues in a hybrid work environment.

Functionalities/possibilities offered by MS Teams in general are limited at KIT.

This service provides the user with external (INTERNET) access to internal resources of the KIT (INTRANET).

Provision and operation of the infrastructure to enable video conferencing for committees and KIT facilities. The BigBlueButton (BBB) software package is used.

Videoconferencing service, for example, to hold project meetings with research colleagues or project partners and to look through documents online or to hold events with a partner institute at a national or international level.

The SCC provides operators of an OPSI server with a repository of "standard software" for their daily use, as well as the software which is covered by the campus license. 
The OPSI packages are updated immediately after the release of manufacturer updates, so that usually the latest versions are made available promptly.

The IT workstations of KIT should, on the one hand, ensure secure operation within the KIT infrastructure and, on the other hand, support the employees in research, teaching, and administration in their work in the best possible way. In order to fulfill this task for all areas, the SCC has worked out different operating models for workstation end devices. The two operating models that support decentrally organized operation are the modular model and the policy model.

The service "External IT support for workstations" is the contract for IT support for IT workstations at KIT. This can be used to cover peak loads in the support of workstation computers in the organisational units at KIT. This work can be assigned to the framework agreement partner (RVP) via individual orders in the ticket system by IT representatives.

Devices with network connection in the network of KIT (KITnet) communicate via this service and can access the internet and intranet, guest network, and contractors’ network.

The WSUS service downloads updates from Microsoft servers and makes them available in the KIT's internal network.

Advice on contract modalities for mobile devices (voice and data tariffs for mobile communications) and advice on device selection for smartphones.

The SCC has its own software shop for distributing the software to employees and students.

This IT service offers KIT employees centrally managed and daily updated virus protection for notebooks, desktop PCs, and servers.

The KMS service enables the automatic allocation and activation of Windows and Office volume licenses.

The Campus Management Portal for Students (Student Portal) is the campus management platform for students and offers various IT services for self-service students (course catalogue, personal timetable, exam registration and cancellation, download of various certificates, etc.).

The Campus Management System "CAS Campus" is the central information system at KIT for the management of all processes related to studying and teaching.

Video conference for oral examinations

For conducting oral examinations via video conference, KIT hosts the web application Jitsi Meet. Apart from a suitable web browser, no other software needs to be installed. The KIT recommends the use of this service for conducting oral examinations via video conference.

The time service ensures synchronized time on distributed computer systems. Various other services require a synchronized time.

For communication and for the use of services in the Internet and Intranet, each computer connected to KITnet requires a registration in the DNS (Domain Name Service).

The DNS data is kept in a central DNS database and transferred on a regular base to the domain name server of the SCC. Registered DNS representatives can use the DNSVS to manage the DNS database.

The Domain Name Service for KIT includes the operation of the DNS-Server, the provision of the self-service portal DNSVS and the execution of domain registration for domains approved by KNN.

eduroam (education roaming) is an international Wi-Fi internet access roaming service for users in research, higher education and further education. The KIT has been a member of the eduroam network since its inception. With eduroam it is possible for employees and students of participating institutions to have a secure WiFi access to the local WLAN at all participating institution for the use of eduroam.

This service makes it possible to transfer exactly the same WLAN conditions that apply on campus to the home office. The service is currently still in the pilot phase. Interested IT officers (ITB) should contact the WLAN support.

 NAT is short for Network Address Translation, NATVS is the associated central administration system at KIT. Prerequisite for the NATVS access is the registration as DNSVS supervisor.

With the use of the web proxy service happens a call from information from the internet via a KIT server (the web proxy) which is put in between.

Direct WiFi access in the institute’s own networks.

This service provides KIT organizations with a pool infrastructure for computer-aided exercises.

For the duration of the protection measures during the corona crisis, the SCC provides remote access to the centrally managed pool computers. Further information can be found in this news article.

The consulting includes planning, conception, if necessary application and procurement of IT equipment and software. The SCC often also takes over the complete financial processing of major projects in the IT environment.

The state service bwCloud SCOPE (Science, Operations and Education) provides virtualized server and application infrastructures as a cloud service for employees, scientists and students at universities and colleges in Baden-Württemberg. bwCloud can operate over 1,000 virtual machines with individual operating systems and software at each operating location. The service runs on dedicated server systems at the four operating sites in Mannheim, Ulm, Freiburg and Karlsruhe - that is a total of at least 4,000 virtual machines for the distributed operation of servers and applications, enough resources for numerous projects.

ChemA is a chemical management system that was developed especially for the KIT and is now also used in other research facilities. It supports the organizational units in the management of their hazardous substances using all existing digital data. It accompanies the substances from the order to the delivery, the internal distribution, the storage, the consumption up to the waste.

In particular, the legal obligation for the KIT to maintain a hazardous substance register and to inform employees about hazardous substance properties is fulfilled with the least possible effort.

The SCC manages the hardware and software of the flexitime recording system. This includes the flexitime terminals installed at KIT for recording clock-in and clock-out times and the associated backend system.

The KIT-wide personal communications directory is provided by the SCC and offers both a self-service in the employee portal (my.scc.kit.edu) to edit one's own communication data and a search mask for a search in the communication data of all employees, guests and partners.

The SAP systems support a wide range of administrative business processes and are used by various service units. SAP ERP functions include financial accounting, procurement and materials management, human resources management and much more.
