General information
KIT websites are generally created using the OpenText web site management system. OpenText makes it easy to create and edit websites without programming knowledge and provides templates in KIT's corporate design.
The request is made via our workflow portal and automatically transmitted to the webmasters, you will be informed about the process.
Step 1: Setting up the web and mail services at KIT/SCC in preparation for the move
If services (e.g. web, mail) are already offered and used within the domain to be transferred, it is essential for a seamless transition to set up or prepare these services in parallel on the KIT-side servers BEFORE the domain transfer date. This means that the websites must run completely on the new KIT-side web servers and be ready for operation at the time of the domain transfer. E-mail addresses that are set up under the domain to be transferred and go beyond the webmaster@domain address, e.g. info@domain, must also be set up by the postmaster BEFORE the transfer. The DNS entries are also already made at KIT so that they can be activated immediately at the time of the domain transfer.
Step 2: Approval of the transfer with the previous registrar and relocation (by e-mail)
Once all preparations have been completed, contact the current domain holder and arrange the following steps (Auth-Code procedure):
- The domain holder must have the domain released for transfer by their registrar (or IT service provider) and request a so-called Auth-Code (or Auth-Info) for this purpose. Make a note of the validity period of the Auth-Code. Once this expires, it becomes invalid (may have to be requested again). If several domains are involved, a separate code is required for each domain.
- The domain holder then sends the Auth-Code received and the corresponding domain name by email to dnsmaster∂scc.kit.edu and cc to webmaster∂kit.edu. Please make sure that the validity period of the Auth-Code(s) is still sufficient. The Auth-Code is basically a one-time password that we can use to identify ourselves as the new domain holder to the current registrar. This authorizes us for the transfer.
Important notes
- When using OpenText, the web server must also be operated at the SCC, no external/own web servers are supported.
- If the domain is administered by the SCC, it is necessary that the web server is also operated at the KIT.
- The use of the SCC file systems is mandatory (i.e. no own NFS servers are supported).
- The virtual web servers are operated at the SCC in a fail-safe cluster.
- The Apache configuration of the virtual web server can be adapted as required with access via the web service account.
- It is also possible to install your own applications.
