Online tools for the summer semester 2020 during the Corona Exception Period

SCC extends the range of services to support online teaching at KIT.

Online LehreTogether with experts from ZML, KIT library and responsible service units, SCC provides the following online tools to support digital courses, seminars, and learning groups.

Seminars and small groups with MS teams

Microsoft Teams is a cloud platform that combines online services such as chat, meetings, video conferences, and shared file editing. There is information and instructions on how to access MS Teams with KIT account and special notes for students.

Lectures and major events with Zoom

For the video conferencing service Zoom, licenses were procured at KIT to increase the variety of possibilities for online teaching. The use is completely voluntary. The provision and use of Zoom is only intended for the period of this exceptional situation in teaching. Further information on Zoom at KIT is provided by the ZML.

Recording of presentations and lectures with ILIAS

The KIT learning management system ILIAS offers students a virtual room in which versatile multimedia contents and communication possibilities can be provided in addition to the course. Recordings of presentations and lectures are available here.

Conducting oral examinations via video conference

For conducting oral examinations via video conference, the KIT hosts the web application Jitsi Meet. The KIT recommends the use of Jitsi Meet for conducting oral examinations via video conference.

Remote access to centrally managed pool computers

For the duration of the protection measures during the corona crisis, the SCC provides remote access to the centrally managed pool computers. This functionality created by the bwLehrpool team in Offenburg and Freiburg is now also being used at KIT. For further information, see this news article.

Notes on data protection

Within the scope of its possibilities, KIT endeavors to use solutions for online teaching that comply with data protection regulations. Due to the currently not realizable scaling of the existing services, the cloud-based online setting had to be used. Lecturers and students are free to decide whether they want to use a cloud-based service or not, knowing which data protection concerns exist on the one hand and how indefinitely possible alternatives to the use of the cloud-based service will be available on the other. The KIT ensures that the non-use of cloud-based services is not sanctioned (e.g., by ensuring that students are not charged for exceeding deadlines caused by non-use of cloud-based courses or exams), and thus also follows current resolutions of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany.

KIT has taken extensive measures to raise the use of cloud-based services to an acceptable level under the circumstances by Corona. For example, the use of Zoom at KIT is based on an order data processing contract that has been adapted to KIT requirements. In particular, KIT has succeeded in designing the passage on the possibility of passing on personal data in conformity with data protection. In addition, attitudes and recommendations for a data-saving use and for minimizing risks from an IT security point of view were elaborated and implemented. This means that students can participate in the sessions without activating their microphone or webcam and without having to give their real name. The students are informed comprehensively about data processing by means of a data protection declaration.
