On April 17, 2026, SCC researchers offered the course Metadata Management: From Key Essentials to Practice online for the first time. As a new part of the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HiDA) offering, this course, offered by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) platform, expands the structured learning opportunities in the division of metadata management. The target of the course is to introduce participants to the basics of metadata management and link them to practical applications.
Data scientists from SCC's Data Exploitation Methods (DEM) department divided the course into two parts. The first section covered the theoretical foundations of metadata, emphasizing its importance and added value in research data management. At the end of this section, the participants took part in an interactive game that served to reinforce the content taught. It was also a fun way to check whether the learning objectives had been achieved.
In the second part of the course, participants were given practical insights and were able to independently create, edit and examine structured metadata in a dedicated test environment.
The active participation of the participants and the very positive feedback in the final survey underline the success of the course.
