On August 10, 2026, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) will begin user operations for the first phase of the new Karlsruhe supercomputer, known as HoreKa 2. This will provide researchers at KIT and the National High-Performance Computing Center (NHR) with a new generation of powerful computing resources for simulations, data analysis, and artificial intelligence applications.
HoreKa 2 is being rolled out in phases. With the start of user operations, the new CPU partition “Onyx” will be made available first. Additional components, including extra GPU resources and specialized nodes for data- and memory-intensive applications, will be added over the coming weeks. The new GPU partition “Jade,” featuring NVIDIA Blackwell technology, will then continue the system’s expansion.
HoreKa 2 was designed as the successor to the HoreKa system, which went into operation in 2021, and relies on the latest CPU and GPU technologies as well as a high-performance storage infrastructure. A key feature is its energy-efficient design: the computing components are cooled almost entirely with hot water. The resulting waste heat can be used for heating, thereby supporting sustainability in data center operations.
In the future, the system will support both traditional high-performance computing applications and demanding AI workloads. As the expansion proceeds in stages, the available computing power will continue to grow over the course of the year.
