P&P News

16.03.26: Changes to web smart addresses/URLs

To ensure consistency in the English translation of our website, some short URLs containing English words have been reassigned for the English pages, and the German short URLs have been adjusted accordingly ("my" → "mein", etc.). We appreciate your understanding.
WORK IN PROGRESS(!), but please don’t hesitate to let us know if you notice any errors—thank you very much!

19.12.25: UPDATE: Users of Affinity Designer

The cause of the error has been identified and the problem has been resolved. We can once again recommend the use of our large format printers without reservation!

25.11.2025: It has repeatedly been found that posters created with Affinity Designer and then exported to PDF format are printed in unsatisfactory quality on our large-format printers.
A typical error is the printing of double (parallel) lines in vector objects, but sometimes also in embedded bitmaps in posters with strong graphic content (architecture posters).

06.11.25: Redesign of the Print & Plot websites: my Print & Plot

This week, the Print & Plot websites are being reorganized. With the introduction of my Print & Plot (★ scc.kit.edu/myprintandplot), you will soon be able to access all personalized services (print account inquiry, print job status, webPRINT) on a single website with just one login. You can switch between functions using tabs.

Please use the “Logout” function in the top right corner when you leave my Print & Plot.

As part of the changeover, all other websites related to P&P that were previously managed separately will also be gradually restructured or consolidated and will then be found in the “FAQ / Help” section.

Problems accessing the site?
Students with older, 4-digit uxxx accounts: Have your password reset by the ServiceDesk.
KIT employees who have recently changed institutes, "Guests & Partners": In some cases, the "ITB" (IT officer) may still need to add the user account in the so called "Gruppenverwaltung" (Group Management).
Outside the KIT network, a secure VPN connection is required!

General

PDFs created with these functions are often flawed. It is better to create PDFs with a PDF printer. For PDFs downloaded from the web, printing errors can usually also be avoided by creating a new PDF with a PDF printer.

Tip: Please also note the following information on "PDF printer options"!

  • PDF printer options...

For PDF printers, the printer option TrueType font: download as Softfont should always be activated! See also Permanently change printer option for PDF printers.

  • Password-protected PDF...

... cannot be printed with webPRINT! Reason: Due to the web upload, the printer cannot request authorization at a later stage. However, printing is possible by converting the file to a PostScript (PS) file:

    • In the Print menu of Adobe Reader, select a PDF printer,
    • Select “Advanced...” → “Output to file” + “OK”.
    • If necessary, change the extension of the new PostScript file from “.prn” to “.ps”!

If the PS file becomes too large, it should be converted back to a PDF using a PDF printer. Detailed instructions can be found in our FAQ.

  • Metallic and spot colors...

...(Spot colors) cannot be converted (“Error at RIP”). Change the color model to ‘RGB’ or “CMYK.”

A3/A4 central printers

  • Acceptable file formats: PDF, PS

  • Multiple pages per sheet (N-up), booklet printing...

Special page layouts must be set in the options window of the PDF printer when creating the PDF or PS file so that the desired print image is defined in the PDF or PS file.

For downloaded PDFs, this can also be done retrospectively using a PDF printer, if the author's security settings allow this (see “Password-protected PDF” above).

  • Large-format documents (A0, A1, A2) are not automatically adjusted...

... and therefore not printed. First, use a PDF printer and the following options to create an A3 or A4 PDF document from the original document and upload it with webPRINT:
    • File → Print → Properties → Advanced... → → Paper size → A3 or A4
    • File → Print → Page Setup and Options → Size → Reduce oversized pages

Further informations on paper sizes and printers can be found at "Printing & Printers"

Large format printer

  • Acceptable file format: PDF only

  • The PDF must have only 1 page; multi-page documents will be rejected with the status "Error @ Download".

  • The desired size format must be defined in the PDF; we print as sent!

  • Accepted paper sizes...
Between ≥ A3 and maximum length of the short edge = 899 mm. A4 documents and all formats outside the above dimensions will be rejected with the status “Error @ Download.”

The paper/page format can be checked in Adobe Reader under File → Properties → Description → Page Format. The following values should be displayed there for planned DIN dimensions—at least approximately:

    • A0: 841 mm x 1189 mm
    • A1: 594 mm x 841 mm
    • A2: 420 mm x 594 mm
    • A3: 297 mm x 420 mm
A3 documents should only be sent to large format printers if a borderless, A3-sized printout is required. Otherwise, printing on the A3/A4 central printers is faster and cheaper.

Further informations on paper sizes and large format printers can be found at "Printing & Printers"

  • Students can only print at Campus South.

A3/A4 orders can usually be picked up at Print & Plot approximately 20-60 minutes after uploading. For large formats, each A0 printout takes 10 minutes (plain paper) to 15 minutes (photo paper). The processing status can be tracked after uploading in the “Status” tab of my Print & Plot.

You can access the webPRINT service via the green “MY PRINT & PLOT - LOGIN” button.
